It’s nine o’ clock and your procrastination rolls into full swing. You’ve barely done any of your homework. “Maybe a 15 minute break will help clear my mind”, you reassure yourself, minimizing the blank Word document and opening up a new window. Suddenly, a plethora of movies and shows flashes before your eyes. You have arrived.

As the popularity of Netflix increases, many Saint Stephen’s students have found themselves in this scenario. Whether you’re a fan of crime, romance, action, comedy, or horror shows, here are five different Netflix series you’re sure to love on those nights when you just need a “short” break.

The Walking Dead – This horror/drama saga is as contagious as the zombie disease it focuses on. The show follows Rick Grimes, a sheriff deputy, who is forced to learn to survive in post-apocalyptic Georgia. Known for its compelling story and special effects, Bobby Harrison, 11th grade, says he likes it because it is “a mix between a drama and a thriller. It’s very exciting and entertaining.”

2. Parks and Recreation – If you’re a fan of The Office and love a good laugh, this award-winning comedy is definitely on the must-watch list. Parks and Rec follows the day-to-day routine of the employees in the Parks and Recreation office in Pawnee, Indiana. As the seasons continue, the hilarious characters develop and the plot twists and turns. The show follows over-enthusiastic employee Leslie Knope and her campaign for city counsel. Junior Nupur Mathur says she watches the show because “it’s funny and Aziz Ansari is amazing.”

3. Breaking Bad – This crime/drama follows Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who’s been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. In order to support his family after he passes, he decides to partner up with his former student, Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul. Walter begins “cooking” drugs, using his knowledge of chemistry to build a business. Sophomore Derek Ziebell says he watches the show because it’s “captivating”. Clearly Breaking Bad is doing something right. It’s already won a Peabody award, numerous Primetime Emmys, a Golden Globe, and many other impressive achievments.

4. Gossip Girl – Have you ever wondered what it’s like living on the Upper East Side? As you follow the stories and love lives of Manhattan’s social elite, this addictive romance/drama will definitely become your new obsession. You’ll become captivated by the relationships and personal lives of main characters Chuck, Blair, Serena, and Nate, along with the outsider siblings Dan and Jenny. Warning: after the first episode you’ll definitely be hooked. Freshman Bailey Barker called it intriguing, adding, “you can’t stop at one episode. You have to watch the whole season.”

5. Arrow – Calling all comic book lovers! This action/ adventure series is based on the comic-book character Green Arrow, and features other DC comic characters.  Green Arrow, who goes by Oliver Queen, is a billionaire who was stranded on a remote island for five years after a violent shipwreck.  Queen takes on the persona of “Arrow”, and fights crime in an attempt to redeem his family. Freshman Samson Yang says he loves this show because it’s “so action packed”, while sophomore Jerry Alex enjoys it because “it’s based off of a DC comic.”
