Picking your first car? Here are five “fun” cars your parents may actually support

Ryan Thompson, News Editor

For those of you out there looking for a new car, there are plenty of options. However, whether you have any say in what your first ride will be is another issue.

If you get to take part in the decision-making process, you have plenty of questions to ask yourself: How many doors do I want? What features are important? Do I care about performance? Do I want a manual? Do I want a car I can modify? Is reliability the number one thing I need?

All of these are valid questions. If you’re someone like myself and most teens, you would like something fun to drive and the rest is really thrown to the side. If you’re a parent, you probably want something safe, economical, and reliable.

Finding a middle ground between the two can be a difficult thing. To help with that, here is my top five list of fun cars that your parents may actually let you get.

Volkswagen GTI: With a modest 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine, this hot hatch strikes a perfect balance between practicality and fun, reaching 60 mph in a 5.7 seconds. Averaging in the high 20’s to low 30’s in fuel economy it won’t burn a hole in your wallet either.

With both manual and automatic transmission options and two or four-door variants depending on the year, this is a great option for all. The 2017 model has trim levels coming standard with a backup camera, blind spot monitoring, and forward brake assist, all adding into its status as an IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick.

Subaru WRX: Another IIHS top safety pick on this list, the Subaru WRX, is safe enough to please your parents. With four doors, optional forward assist braking, blind spot monitoring, and fuel economy in the high 20’s, it is a great pick. With a 0-60 time in the five-second range and a manual transmission, this car is plenty fun as well. For those of you not wanting the fun of rowing through the gears yourself, a CVT automatic transmission is available as well, although if that is the case, this probably is not the car for you.

Jeep Wrangler: An American classic. This car needs little introduction as their popularity has made the wrangler a household name. This works to the advantage of the buyer as they are known to have very strong resale values, part support, and modding capabilities. With strong off-roading capabilities, the Wrangler is plenty of fun for the driver. Coming with either manual and automatic transmission, two or four doors, and a cloth or hard top, this car has a spec for every buyer.

Ford Focus ST: Another hot hatch makes the list with the Focus ST. An unsung hero in the car community, the ST balances fun and practicality very well. With a fuel economy average around 30, strong reliability, and plenty of cargo space, and a backup camera standard, this car is one of the more practical on this list. For those who can’t drive a manual, you’re out of luck as the Focus ST–like every good sports car should be–is manual transmission only.

Subaru BRZ/ Toyota 86: Featuring the well-known Subaru Boxer engine, the Subaru BRZ/ Toyota 86 won’t run into any problems with reliability. Two doors, beautiful styling, and rear-wheel drive make this car a dream to drive. For the parents looking for a reliable and safe car for their kids that will let them have some fun, this is a good option. With this car being sold by two companies, there are plenty of different option and appearance packages to choose from as well.
