As you step into Millie’s, on Clark Road, Sarasota, you’ll be greeted by the smell of the hot French toast and an array of original dishes. Offering over 100 breakfast dishes, the local favorite has been serving customers since 1959.
Now owned by Natalie Nikkius and George Nikkius, Millie’s has created a legacy since its start in 1987 of serving homemade meals in a warm, inviting environment.
From Illinois, to Wisconsin, Arizona, and finally Sarasota, Nikkius has built a reputation for building restaurants with tradition, comfort and connection.
The original owner, Mildred Novak, nicknamed Millie, turned 80 in 1988 and believed that retirement wouldn’t be the end of her life. She believed wherever she went prosperity followed, and she was right. Sadly she passed away on September 23, 2005 at the age of 96.
According to an local news article that hangs on the wall in Millie’s, Mildred Novack embraced life’s challenges.

“I can’t stand an idle existence,” quoted Novak. “I love challenges, and a new restaurant is a challenge to me… People grow old faster when they do nothing.”
Once she retired in Florida, Novak sold her business to one of her employees with joy.
Running the restaurant for 21 years, the new owner, Nikkius, realized that Millie’s represents more than just a restaurant. Many of the original recipes remained unchanged, even with the industry facing rising costs for food.
“She was a hardworking lady,” Nikkius said about Novak. “The salad dressings, stuffed French toast, it all came from her… The customers feel at home.”
Nikkius, inspired by Millie’s character, strives to continue her legacy through consistency, and the restaurant remains busy to this day.
“By mid-morning, we usually have a long wait,” Nikkius said. “It’s [Millie’s Restaurant] about getting everyone in and out while making sure everything is up to standard.”
Mrs Jessica Benzán, my mother, is a long-time patron, and she spoke on the new owners’ effort in running the restaurant and her experience as a customer and a previous staff member.
Coming back at least twice a month for her favorite French toast with apricots and blueberries, Benzan appreciates the environment and recipes at Millie’s.
“It’s one of the best places to eat breakfast,” Benzan said. “You won’t find French toast like this in any other Sarasota restaurant.”
She also loves the atmosphere just as much as the food.
“I love to see old people here,” Benzán said. “Because I can see myself coming over when I’m old. They [Millie’s employees] pay attention, serve you, and make you feel at home.”
Not only does Benzán go often,, but she also carries stories from this restaurant. Her connection with Millie goes way back.
“I was pregnant with my first child and stopped one day for breakfast,” Benzán said. “I met Millie, she asked if I could help her for a couple of weeks, and I had so much fun working there for a few weeks.”
As Mrs Benzán’s relationship with Millie grew over time until her passing, she recalls Millie’s connection to her own childhood.
“She was like my grandma in Mexico when I met her,” Benzán said. “I think that’s why I helped her, she was desperate to find somebody to work for her.”
Because of her past of growing up in a hard-working family, Benzán resonated with not only the restaurant but the ownership.
“I hope it [the restaurant] never disappears,” Benzán said. “At least until I’m alive.”
For many customers, staff members, and even the current owners, Millie’s feels like home.
“It feels like you’re sitting in your grandmother’s kitchen,” Benzan added.
