After last week’s Homecoming Week run-down during assembly, many were left wondering what spawned the big changes to one of the most important and tradition-heavy weeks of the school year.
According to Student Council President George Frano, the aim with alterations to the events and schedule this year is to bring more organization and engagement.
The core changes are as follows:
- No relay race (instead there will be a PowderPuff Game)
- No floats (instead there will be a skit with props in the S.T.E.A.M. Center)
- No chant (instead a “Cheer Presentation” will occur at PowderPuff’s half-time.
- The Skit (with props) event will take place separate from the All-School Pep Rally
According the Frano, the relay race was cut because it drew little participation, with most students “just watching from the stands.”
The float, which has long been difficult logistically, was replaced with a Skit-focused presentation, with heavy weight on the props designed and constructed.
Frano believes excitement is high regarding the new format. As a Star Wars fan, he’s most looking forward to the Star Wars themed Dance-Off.
Junior Luke Ribero De Sa supported replacing relay with a PowderPuff game, and the “chant” with a cheer presentation. But de Sa said switching the float for props was a mistake.
“It [the float] was the most exciting tradition,” de Sa said. “Without it we could lose some of the week’s energy.”
Changes have also been made to the scheduling. The Skit-and-Props event will take place on Friday morning, in the S.T.E.A.M Center, and the event will be separated from the all-school Pep Rally which will take place at the end of the day.
English teacher and StuCo advisor Mr. David Johnson said that having the Skit in the S.T.E.A.M. Center will improve the quality of the event.
“People will be able to see it [the skit and props] more clearly,” Johnson said. “And the sound quality will be infinitely better than it was in the gym.”
