Ms. Jessica Clark has only taught at SSES for six weeks, but in that time, she’s already become a student-favorite due to her connection with students and her hands-on teaching techniques.
“She’s freshly out of college,” junior Lynn Minor said. “She can relate and understand the students which makes her easy to like.”
Clark recently graduated from Washington and Lee University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and a minor in math. In high school, Clark attended a small episcopal school, so to this environment.
According to Clark, the role at Saint Stephen’s “aligned perfectly with what I wanted.”
Clark never imagined loving teaching high school as much as she’s now finding it, but she commented, “I’m really excited every single morning to wake up and come to school. I love the students so much”
Clark tries her best to understand kids and gives students the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills.
As a teacher, one main goal of hers is to have the kids, “leave the classroom liking science a little more than before.”
Instead of lecturing for lessons, Clark’s teaching techniques consist of introducing every unit with hands-on labs, class discussions and group work activities. She enjoys a collaborative style because it’s more engaging.
“That way it’s like a really immersive learning experience,” Clark said. “Instead of me just like lecturing out.”
For Lynn Minor, Clark’s hands-on style shows a work ethic that she really appreciates.
“She puts in effort to make sure everyone understands,” Minor said.
