The Red-Shouldered Hawk of the US library

The elusive red-shouldered hawk can be seen on campus if you are looking in the right places. Many days the campus-hawk sits in the tree right outside the US large library windows. Many confuse this hawk as the “campus falcon,” but what separates a falcon from a hawk is the notch on the beak of a falcon and falcons are generally smaller.

Mrs. Pommer hasn’t seen the hawk since Christmas break. “I have never seen the hawk land or even leave,” Mrs. Pommer says, as hawks are known to be stealthy. Pommer said, “He blends in really well” and “people never seem to notice him” when he is sitting in the tree outside the library window.

While the hawk may be hard to come by, you are much more likely to see it over a break period. Mrs. Pommer commented on how she sees him much more often over summer when students are not roaming around the campus and it is quiet.
