The manatees of the McLewis Bayou

The manatees of the McLewis Bayou

If you ever have time to visit the bayou, you may be surprised by all the wildlife that can be found both in and out of the water. Our Bayou, being desolate and calm, “is a perfect nursery area for manatees,” Mrs. Shields says. Many manatees have been known to come into our boyau to take care of their newborn calves.

Mrs. Shields recalls that “more often than not, Mr. Jenson [our Admissions Director] sees manatees by the dock when giving tours of the campus. When manatees calf, the momma manatee and a female relative manatee will come together to help give birth in water like our bayou help watch after both of them after the birthing.”

So if you ever find yourself walking over the bayou bridge, be sure to look in the water and see if you can spot some manatees.
