Falcon girls tie with Shorecrest

The varsity girls’ soccer team faced long-time rival Shorecrest Preparatory School last Friday in a game that ended in a tie.

In the first half, Shorecrest came close to the Falcon’s goal, but senior Gabriel Woodruff, keeper for Falcons, made her first save 17 minutes into the game. Junior Kayla Hayes took a ball to the face, but she was able to stand back up and continue playing.

The Falcons had a couple of opportunities to score in the second half. The girls immediately took charge in the second half, and with 29 minutes to go, they had a corner. Shorecrest quickly regrouped and after a few minutes came close to scoring, but Woodruff had full control of the situation, again blocking their goal.

Senior Lexi Sedillo took control of the ball with 18 minutes left in the game but was stopped by two defenders on her way to the goal.

As the end of the game drew nearer, both teams became more aggressive. Junior Becca Banks was injured and left the field with 12 minutes to go. The Falcons were pressured by the attacks of the rival team in the final minutes of the game, but once again Woodruff was there to defend the goal. The final score was 0-0.

Head Coach Eric Howell said he was happy with the way the girls played.

“It is a good result for us because we are missing a couple players today and we had some young ones come up,” he said.

Senior Christina Jones, captain, said it was a tough game and the girls had to put all of their effort in that evening.

“This game is probably the hardest we are going to face this season,” she said.

Woodruff, who protected the goal all night, said she was proud of the teamwork the Falcons displayed, considering that Shorecrest had a great offense.

“We definitely played as a team, and our defenders did really well,” she said.
