When most people think of rock, they think of shrill, electric guitar solos and flashy, lyrics.  Think Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and Queen.  They probably don’t think of a gap-toothed, scruffy-haired hippie who produces all his own music in his basement.

But, Mac Demarco is exactly that. His songs are the definition of chill, with satirical hymns to Viceroy cigarettes and heart-wrenching pleas to the American government to approve his girlfriend’s green card status.

Yes, he seems vapid and boring, but that’s exactly what he capitalizes off of; the everyday and mundane. His sincerity and simplicity have garnered him a massive fanbase, and it’s easy to see why. With songs like Freaking Out the Neighborhood and Salad Days the listener reflects on the consequences of growing older, while the song The Way You’d Love Her brings about the feelings associated with warm summer nights with friends. Mac’s unique personality and nostalgic soft-rock tunes offer something for everyone: from the recovering early 2000’s emo rocker to today’s pop connoisseur, anybody and everybody can find their niche with Mac Demarco’s music.
